ACTO will be at the VIII Congress of COICA

The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) accepted the invitation of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA, Spanish acronym), and will be present at the Eighth Congress of COICA, which begins tomorrow, November 20 in Iquitos, Peru. The event lasts four days and its objective is to extend the information, discussion and the progress made by COICA in different scenarios, nationally and internationally.

The coordinator of Indigenous Affairs of ACTO, Jan Tawjoeram, will attend the meeting in order to present the keys for the Organization to support sustainable development initiatives for indigenous peoples in Amazonia, as envisaged in ACTO’s Plan of Action.

One of the priorities of the conference is to achieve the effective participation of indigenous peoples of each Amazon country in the programs that include and support their development. This priority is also described in the Strategic Plan 2004-2012 of ACTO, which is under review by the Permanent Secretariat.

The VIII Congress of COICA comes two weeks after the ACTO workshop on Lands and Territories of Indigenous and Other Tribal Communities of the Amazon, held in Brasilia between the 3rd and 5th of November.
